This week is going to be oh so fun!! We are winding down and putting all those pieces together. It's about time, right? Welcome to Clue 8. I am up in Montana enjoying grands along with a son and daughter. What a perfect way to spend part of October. Now, back to the beach.
PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE CLUE BEFORE BEGINNING.
Cutting:
Using Color 4 (med. blue), cut 16 - 2" squares AND 32 - 1 1/4" x 5 1/2" bricks.
Using Color 5 (dk. blue), cut 16 - 3" squares
Using Color 7 (if doing this) or Color 6 (if not), cut 16 - 2" x 4 3/4" bricks
Using the Color 4 and 5 squares that you just cut, subcut them all on the diagonal to yield 32 triangles of each.
UNIT 17 - Make 16. Yes, this looks VERY familiar doesn't it? It is the same unit you made in Clue 6 only with different colors. You should just breeze through this and my directions will not be as detailed. If you have questions, refer to Clue 6.
First things first. You need to mark the 45 degree angle on the Color 4 bricks as shown.
Then, trim those ends off.
Now it's time to sew. With the Color 7 (or 6) bricks and the trimmed Color 4 bricks, let's get started.
Finding the center in each, place as shown and sew using a 1/4" seam.
Repeat with the other side.
Press and TA-DA. I love it when the words line up perfectly.
Get the Color 4 triangles and the units you are working on.
Again, finding the center, place as shown and stitch using a 1/4" seam.
Repeat on the other side.
The funky little unit is growing.
With the Color 5 triangles, find the centers once again and place as shown. Stitch, using a 1/4" seam.
Press out and trim to 4 1/2" square, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance on your points. (Yes this one is off and I didn't notice it until I went to sew them together -- had to make another one.)
Block C - Make 16 (Okay, so I'm not the best with paint on this block, but you get the idea. It was super hard to draw that center block and I know it looks funky.)
Gather 32 Unit 4's, 32 Unit 5's, 32 - Unit 10's, 32 - Unit 11's, and your newly made Unit 16's.
Lay out as shown. The larger "arrow" will be the medium blue if you have your center pointed the correct way.
If you want to web, start by laying the center column onto the first column and stitch all three at once in a 1/4" seam.
Repeat by laying the third column over the second and stitch.
Fold the top row down onto the middle row and stitch.
Open that up and fold the bottom row up to the center row and stitch. Press and make sure you have a 12 1/2" block.
Continue until all 16 blocks are finished.
For those who have done my mysteries before, ya'll know that I really dislike having to put the whole thing together at the end. I am also not a huge fan of great big rows while setting, especially when strings are involved. As a result, we are going to go a bit further and here is your last step for this week.
Gather your 16 - Block A's and the newly created 16 Block C's. You are going to make some giant four-patches. That's right.
BIG BLOCK A - Make 8
Layout the block as shown, making sure of the direction your centers are going. ALL of the Big Block A's are the same. Watch those center directions.
Once 8 are made, that's it for this week. I am super excited to have gotten this far. Until next week, keep on creating.
