A Day At The Beach - Clue 6

Clue 6??? Is that right??? WOW -- It's getting close now.  The little bits are all starting to come together and we are going to build some blocks.  Woohoo!!!!

PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE CLUE BEFORE BEGINNING.

Cutting:  Using Color 1 (lt. green) cut 32 - 1 1/4" x 5 1/2" bricks.  I know the sizes in this clue are odd, but it can't be helped.

AND 16 - 2" squares

Using Color 6 - cut 16 - 3" squares.  I am using a constant toasty neutral here.

Using Color 7 (if doing this) or Color 6 (if not), cut 16 -  2" x 4 3/4" bricks.

This is what you should have.

Prep Work:

Cut the Color 1 and Color 6 squares in half diagonally.  You can draw a line if you wish or just line up the ruler and use your rotary cutter.

Using the Color 1 bricks, draw a 45 degree line on each end as shown.  You can also skip drawing the lines and just cut if you feel confident.  I was at retreat and needed handwork that no one would understand so drawing lines worked for me.

Trim those ends off

Okay - we are ready to begin.

Unit 14 - Make 16 - Album Block

Gather your Color 7 (or 6) bricks and the pre cut Color 1 bricks.

Fold each in half to find the center.  Yes, this unit is a bit tedious but there are only 16 of them so power through.

With right sides together, line up the folds as shown

And stitch using a 1/4" seam.

Repeat with the other side

Press and this is your unit so far.

Yes, this part can easily be chained.

Using the Color 1 triangles that you cut previously, fold the unit in half lengthwise and then the triangle as well - see picture.  With right sides together, line up the folds and stitch using a 1/4" seam.

Repeat on the other end.

With the Color 6 triangles you previously cut, repeat this process only fold the unit in half vertically and line the folds together.  Stitch using a 1/4" seam.

Repeat with the second side.

Press and use a ruler to trim to 4 1/2" square.  The spots to use for aligning are the cut 45 degree angle areas as best as you can.

TA-DA -

My finished units along with all their sweet little slivers.

Okay - let's build a block.

Block A - Make 16 -  Gather your unit 1's, 3's, and newly made 14's.

Using all 64 Unit 1's, Unit 3's, and the 16 newly made Unit 10's, layout the block as shown.  Please make sure all your centers are going the same way.

Lay the center column over the first with right sides together and stitch using a 1/4" seam, creating a web.

Repeat the process by laying the last column over the second one and stitch using a 1/4" seam to complete the web.

You should have a webbed block like this now

Stitch the remaining cross seams with the first row dropping down over the middle section.

This is your result I hope

Repeat by lifting the lower row up over the middle section and stitching.

And TA-DA -- you have a block.

Make sure that you are 12 1/2" square and trim if necessary.  If you are too small, you will need to check your seam allowance to achieve the desired result.

Press and Block A is complete.

Continue with all 16 blocks.
