A Day At The Beach - Clue 4

Clue FOUR means that we have been together on this journey for a month now.  Say it isn't so and that our lives are not racing by that quickly.  Please.

I am back from a wonderful time at the beach with ladies that are so near and dear to my heart.  We have laughed til our bellies hurt, cried a few tears together, and formed bonds that will hopefully never die.  However, now it is time to get back to the real world and I'm ready, although reluctant.

I know it's repetitive, but PLEASE read all the way through the clue before starting.

This week are two tried and true units for you but first, let's do some cutting.

Using Color 1, Light Green, cut 128 - 1 1/2" x  3" bricks.

Using Color 4, Medium Blue, cut 60 PAIR of 3" Easy Angle triangles.  You can always use what ever method you prefer to cut 120 triangles that will finish at 3".

Using Color 5, Dark Blue, cut 264 1 1/2" squares.

Using Color 6, Toasty Neutrals, cut 60 - 3" Companion Angle triangles.  I opted to go constant here but you are welcome to do strings if you want.

If you don't have the Companion Angle ruler or wish to use another method, one option is to cut 6 1/4" squares and cut your quarter triangles from them as shown.  Yours will not have that little hole in the center.

That's it for cutting this week.

Unit 7 - Make 60 Flying Geese

Locate the 60 Quarter Triangles and 60 PAIR of Half Triangles you just cut.

Sew one color 4 triangle onto the Color 6 quarter triangle as shown here.

I would do one complete unit before chaining to make sure you have the correct size.

Happily chain away on these until you have reached the end of your cut pieces and have a fun little stack sitting somewhere.

Press this side back CAREFULLY.  It has bias and if you press too much, the second triangle will not fit properly.

Place the second triangle onto your unit as shown

And once again, happily chain away.  These are easy right?

A new shape of delight awaits me.

Press

Measure - It should be 3" x 5 1/2"

Last step is to clip those dog ears.  TA-DA --- Unit 7 is finished.

BOTH THE UNITS HAVE DIRECTIONS BELOW

Unit 8 - Make 64

Unit 9 - Make 64  (No, they are not the same as the unit 8's.  They are sewn in a different orientation )

Gather the Color 1 bricks and the color 6 - 1 1/2" squares

This unit is a bit small and a bit tedious.  The good news is that the marking and trimming parts are perfect for t.v. time.

With a marking pen that won't bleed through to the front of your fabric, draw a diagonal line on the back of each of the color 5 - 1 1/2" squares.

Separate your Color 1 bricks into two equal stacks of 64 each so that you will know when you have enough of one direction and can easily switch to the other.

Make one of each first to make sure you are on track.

First, place one Color 5 square on the right side of the Color 1 brick with right sides together and the diagonal line ending in the lower right corner and stitch ALONG SIDE the drawn line - about one thread to the right of it.  This will help you to have the right size flip when you finish as the fold itself takes up space along with the thread.

With your unit, flip the square out to make sure it completely covers the original brick area.  Be gentle.

Measure - the size of your brick should NOT have changed.  It should still be 1 1/2" x 3"

If it covers correctly, trim off the back to approximately 1/4".  I really cut this one straight didn't I?

Repeat the process with the second set of Color 1 bricks, this time laying the Color 5 square so that the diagonal line ends in the bottom left corner.  My fabric just seems so thready in these pictures.

Chain away until you once again reach the end of the stack of bricks.

Verify again that you have stitched it correctly by pressing out to see if it covers the area.

Trim and measure.

And just like that you have two cute little stacks of flip and sew bricks.

YES -- you have lots of squares leftover.

And that's it.  Clue 4 is finished and you are free to work on something else for the rest of the week.

Did you remember to read all the way down?  If so, here is your inventory list:
