Minneapolis Airport Stop - Small Quilt Exhibit

We are in Minneapolis with a short layover and as we walk the mall area, I notice a small quilt exhibit along one wall.  It is called "Seasons" and is from the Minnesota Chapter of Studio Art Quilt Associates.  They wrote, "This exhibit is an expression of our love for the four seasons of the Midwest.  With the change of the seasons, we change the way we dress, what we eat, and our activities.  We want to celebrate the bounty that we find in each season."

First is "Happy Alps" by Enid Gjelten Weichselbaum (2017).  She writes, "I loved watching cartoons as a child - not just for the stories, but for the drawing.  I still love these graphic, simple, and evocative images, especially the stylish mid-century early animation of television and moves.  It was a particular scene that inspired this quilt."

Next is "Sing in the Dark" by Patten Arensen (2022).  Her statement is:  "Cardinals are a contrast to the winter world around them.  They are bright when the weather is bleak.  Their mere presence dispels the darkness and when they begin to sing, hope is renewed.  Be like the cardinal."

The third quilt is "Ruach" by Anne-Lu Hovis.  She says, "The winter landscape in norther Minnesota is covered in several feet of snow and even the lightest wind will pick up the flakes to swirl the snow around.  This piece is named after the Hebrew word 'Ruach' (or Ruah) which means wind, Spirit, or breath of God, all of which are well represented in Minnesota.  What a beautiful site when you experience Ruach."

Next is "The Seasons of Life" by Patty Arensen (2022).  Her statement is:  "Inside every young woman, an old woman is growing.  Inside every old woman is the bride and little girl she once was.  This is all seen in The Seasons of Life.  The three photos in this work are of my grandmother at years old, on her wedding day and as an old woman."  The pictures changed depending on the angle you viewed the quilt.  Very cool.

Last up is "Wintry Mix" by Guila Greer (2018).  Guila writes, "A mélange of snow, rain, wind, sleet and icy temperatures with a hint of blue skies equals Wintry Mix.  During a road trip from Los Angeles to Minneapolis, my granddaughter and I suddenly encountered Wintry Mix whilst driving in Utah.  This was a rude awakening following a very balmy cruise through the desert terrain of Nevada.  When the sun peeked through for a moment, the snow sparkled on the foliage lining the highway and was beautiful.  My dear granddaughter introduced me to this Midwest term - another great memory of our drive together."

Well, that's it --- off to our flight now.
