Sapphire Blues - Clue 5

Well, last week's post was not entirely accurate.  At the time it posted, I was not at the beach any longer.  I had to leave on Friday for a family emergency and just couldn't get the wherewithal to make the change.  Today, I am home.  Recuperating from a VERY hectic and crazy solid month.  Most was incredible -- some was difficult.  I have truly felt the beauty of sapphires and the blues of our title all in one month.  It is what it is and with that -- let's move on.

This week we are going to be building onto the units previously made.  That makes the directions pretty simple and not too much cutting is involved to boot.  Good, right?

As always, please read all the way to the end before starting --- it helps avoid some of those mistakes I've been seeing.

Cutting: (1) Dark Blue - From 2 1/2" strips and using the Easy Angle ruler (see clue 2 for directions if necessary), cut 100 PAIR of triangles.  If using regular rotary cutting methods, cut 100 2 7/8" squares and then subcut them on the diagonal to get the triangles.  You can also use whatever method you chose in clue 2.  It'll work again.

That's it for cutting this week.

Now, time to get to work.

Unit 7 - Make 50

Gather up your Unit 3's and the newly cut triangles.

Just as we did in Clue 2 - we are going to add another round to our square in a squares.  Do you remember the steps?  Starting on one side, find the centers and lay one triangle as shown.

As I did before, I flip my unit over so that I can see where the points of the white center are and not lose them in the seam.  THIS is where you can make adjustments if your squaring of Unit 3 was slightly off.

Now, add the opposite side with a second triangle.

And follow the same process.

Press to the dark blue.

Trim

Add the 3 triangle just as the first.  Remember that if you used the Easy Angle Ruler, one side will automatically line up.

Following the same process, stitch and maintain those points.

Last round ---

As before - one side will tell you exactly where to place this if you used the Easy Angle Ruler.

Stitch the final side.

And press to the dark once again.

We are squaring these to 3 1/2".  You should have plenty of fudge space on these as I overcut the triangles for this very reason.

One done -- now move through all 50.

TA-DA

Trimmings?  Why, yes there are trimmings.

Now for the second unit this week.

Unit 8 - Make 56

Gather up the Unit 2's from clue 1 and the rectangles cut in clue 4.

Lay out as shown.

Dropping the top unit 2 over the center -

Stitch.

Press to the center --- I know - it's odd to go to the light.

Add the lower unit 2.

Stitch.

Press to the center once again.  Your units should be 3 1/2" x 5".  Are they?

And that's it for this week.  Your completed units 7 and 8.  Now, go play with your other projects and I'll see you again, bright and early Saturday.  Please take a few minutes to post your finished clues in our Sapphire Blues Mystery Facebook Group.  If you haven't joined yet, here is the LINK.  Have fun y'all.
