August Quilt Update

Welcome to the Monthly Update.  What does that mean?  Well, it's just little ol me trying to recap what took place during the month so that I can keep track.  I kind of use it like a journal.  Please sit back and enjoy a peek into a month of my life.

Any links that you click in this post will open in a DIFFERENT window, allowing you to continue reading this without losing the page.

The previous 2017 monthly update links are located at the end of this entry.  I hope that you make it that far.

1st - It is my last day in San Francisco.  Wow -- these days just flew by but then again, so has the whole summer.  Hello August.  Oh golly -- there is SOOOO much to do this month and I have more trips.  Will it all happen?

I am up and packed, checked out of room, and waiting in the lobby for Amanda and Abe.  We are walking about 8 blocks for breakfast at Sweet Maple.  Let's hope it is worth the hype.

Japanese Garden Costumes

Today's visit to the Portland Japanese Gardens netted me a lovely surprise in amongst the  sand gardens.  I received a great education in theater AND was treated to seeing incredible costumes in person.  Fiber, people -- fiber.  It's what we are all about right?

I wish to pass the information on -- yes, it's a bit but if you make it through -- the costumes are incredible.

The word kabuki literally refers to the lively song (ka) and dance (bu) performances (ki) that brought to life the exuberant merchant culture of Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868).

A Unique Quilt Show/Shop in Fossil, Oregon

Our destination for today is Fossil, Oregon, a place we think may offer a good viewing of the eclipse tomorrow.  As we arrive in town, there is a street fair in place.  Everyone is having a great time and I spot a sign over a door that it appears hasn't opened in a very long time.  However, the sign looks new.

I go next door to the Fossil Mercantile and peek in.  Well lookie here -- I've found the quilt show.  Enjoy the eye candy.

24 Hours at Miller's B&B

As a result of globetrotting and running camps all summer, I have been experiencing a dearth of girl time.  Not mother/daughter or granddaughter "girl" but my GIRL time.  I've watched people gather at various places to sew together and wished I could too, but it just didn't fit the schedule.  However, one event caught my eye and I thought, maybe, just maybe, I could make it happen.  My soul sister (I'll explain that sometime), Sherri, is alone for 10 days and has opened her home to visitors.  That includes weekdays.  Aha!  I happen to have one of those in between Abilene and Portland.  With the perseverance of a pit bull, I grab ahold and sink my teeth into this idea.  I know I can only eke out ONE day, but 24 hours would be incredible.

With some quick talking through a beer, I have secured the car.  Woohoo.  Now, can I leave the night before?  Yippee!!!  This means that my sweet machine needs a spa treatment.  Come on pretty lady, you're gonna like this and feel oh so much better when we are finished.  (Seriously ladies - she's getting cleaned.)

I am packed and ready to go when my sweetie arrives home from work.  A few minutes later, the car is loaded and I am on the road again.  I am starting to believe that Willie sang that song just for all of us.  It only requires a few word changes and you'll know just what I mean.  Check it out.

1st - Summer camp sessions are still in full swing.  With one week remaining before this one ends, the list of ideas still have some unchecked items.  Today the DMA is on tap and while there, they have an exhibit by Iris van Herpen entitled, "Transforming Fashion."  That sounds like fabric to me so we make a point to check it ou.  I have to tell you that some of these dresses look dang uncomfortable but give it up to creativity.

Ava's Quiet Book

6/7  Miss Ava, my granddaughter, is turning one next month and since I made her sister a quiet book for her first birthday and personalized it so that it was unique and "just hers", I am about to embark on a second adventure.  To see the first one, here's your LINK.  It likely has more construction pictures and info than this one as, well, this is round two.

Apparently you CAN teach an old dog new tricks because I learned a LOT the last time.  I will not start out by doing a couple pages at a time.  Each step will be completed for all pages at the same time.  Now where to start?

Out to the studio I go.  Do I have enough solid fabric stored?  YES!!!  Wohoo -- a little happy dance here.  That's my big step forward for today.  I have a grandson visiting and limited time.

Heritage Village Treasures

We've opted to do a real step back in time type of Indepence Day celebration.  My sweet man looked into the Heritage Village in Dallas and found that they were doing things up right today.  Therefore, it' a plan and we are off for some fun.  With three grands in tow, I'm sure it will be a blast.

Upon our arrival, it's already apparent that this will be special and I'm in heaven.  You can read all about our day by clicking on this LINK and scrolling down to day two.  I am only going to highlight a few things in this separate writing.

Several of the old homes have great mementos of the past and I just can't stop my camera from clicking.  Take a stroll back in time with me through pictures.  It's pretty sweet.
