A Day At The Beach - Clue 5

Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello . . . . I am glad to greet you ... (did you sing?)  Welcome to week FIVE!!  That's right.  FIVE!!  I have been home from the beach for 10 days now and still have that lovely relaxed feeling going on.  Do you believe me?

At any rate - are you ready to get started?

PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE CLUE BEFORE BEGINNING.

Cutting Directions for Clue 5:

1.  With Color 3 (light blue) - Cut 132  - 2" squares and 136 - 1 1/2" x 2" bricks.  You do all of this with 2" strips.  Set the squares aside as you will not use them in this clue.

2.  With Color 4 (medium blue) AND color 5 (dark blue) - Cut 64 - 2 1/2" squares of EACH COLOR.  Working with 2 1/2" strips makes this go super quick.  That's it for cutting this week.

Units 10 & 11 - make 32 of EACH  -- They ARE different and it WILL matter.

To begin, you will need the 2 1/2" squares of colors 4 and 5 that you just cut.  Also, 64 if the color 6 - 4 1/2" squares you have in reserve.  (If stringing, they are the straight ones.)

We are going to do sew and flip corners on these so if you are like me and want to be sure your corner fits, take the time now to draw a diagonal line on each of those color 4 and color 5 squares.

Once your line is drawn, we will start with the Unit 10's.  (If you did strings, please make sure they are horizontal when you start this unit).   Lay one color 6 square in the upper right corner as shown and place on machine so that you are sewing one thread width INSIDE the drawn line.

We do this for the same reason as we did on the Unit's 8 and 9 last week.  No one wants their blocks to get out of shape by having the flip not reach the edge of the unit.

Flip it and make sure it reaches correctly.

THIS IS AN ADDITIONAL STEP AND DEFINITELY NOT REQUIRED!!!  When I was drawing lines, I drew a second line in order to get a bonus triangle.  I drew mine 1/2" away to get the size of bonus half square triangles I desired.  If you wish to do this, play around to find the line you need to get the size you want.  You will want to stitch ON the second line, not a thread off.  If you don't wish to do this, just leave out anything that talks about the second stitch line.

I chain sew.  Every opportunity to chain is taken advantage of.  Honest.  For this second seam, nothing changes.  Chain away.  When finished, snip your units apart and cut between the stitched lines.

You should now have 1/2 of Unit 10 and a lovely little bonus HST to play with.

Repeat the entire process, making sure to rotate your string unit so that the strings are now vertical and you are attaching the medium blue square to the upper right corner.

With and without the second seam.

Flip back to make sure it fits right.

Measure to verify that you are still 4 1/2" square.

Trim the corner and if you did the double line, enjoy more bonus HST's.

Moving on to Unit 11  -- Everything starts exactly the same EXCEPT your string block is vertical when you lay the square in place.  That is if you did strings.  (See the double lines?)

Stitch as before.  Trim as before

Half of unit 9 is finished.

Add the medium blue square with the strings horizontal (if you did them).

Stitch and trim as before.

If you did bonus triangles, this is your net for this clue so far.  No, we are not finished yet.  (The trimmings are from squaring up the bonus triangles --- I am not THAT good and my size was a bit off for what I wanted to finish with.)

Units 12 & 13 - Make 68 of EACH

You will need the color 3 (light blue) bricks you cut above and all 136 of your color 5 (dark blue) 1 1/2" squares that are in reserve.

Split the bricks in half as you want half to go one way and the other half to go the other way.  By splitting the bricks, you won't make too many of one.

Back in clue 4 I drew the lines on all of my color 5 - 1 1/2" squares.  If you didn't, you may want to now.  Lay a color 5 square on the brick as shown.  The diagonal line should go from upper left corner to lower right corner.

Stitch in place using the sew and flip method and staying one thread width inside the line on the seam allowance side.  Check to make sure you are covering the flip area.  Do all 68 this way.

Trim and Press.

With the remaining 60 bricks, lay one color 6 square with the line going from lower left to upper right and stitch as before, staying inside the line one thread width.

Flip, press (the opposite of how you pressed the first one), and trim.

And a completed clue.  All parts present and accounted for.

And for those who checked, here is your inventory list:

2 - 9" neutral (color 6) squares (if stringing - they are diagonal)
4 - 4 1/2" neutral (color 6) squares (if stringing - 4 diagonal)
