Hello there! Week 3 is upon us and you will find that it's almost a repeat of last week. Yep - more Birds in the Air variation units. Same bat channel, different bat colors. I didn't time the cutting part of this, but started sewing the entire clue at around noon and was totally finished by 3 and that included photographing and writing as I went. You've got this!
AS ALWAYS: PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE CLUE BEFORE STARTING.
To start: Cut 32 - 2 1/2" squares from EACH of colors 4 and 5 (medium and dark blue)
Additionally, cut 32 PAIR (total 64) of 2 1/2" Easy Angle triangles in EACH color 4 and 5. These are the exact same size as the color 1 (lt.green) ones last week so if you used a different method, you are good to go again without figuring out new math.
Lastly, cut one 3 1/2" strip of EACH colors 1 and 5, place them right sides together and cut 4 PAIR of 3 1/2" triangles with the Easy Angle ruler. (If you are cutting using a different method, you need whatever will give you a 3 1/2" finished HST)
UNIT 4 - make 32
You will need - 32 - Color 5 2 1/2" squares, 32 PAIR Color 4 2 1/2" triangles, and 32 of your clue 1 color 6 triangles.
Remember what you did last week? Repeat. Start by sewing one triangle onto a square with a 1/4" seam as shown. After your first sample one, continue by chaining your way through them all.
Press open.
Now, with those pressed units, add another triangle as shown.Stitch with a 1/4" seam and chain away as before. Yes, there will be overlap while chaining. It's still faster than removing each piece and cutting the thread. Also more economical as you don't waste all that expensive thread.
Press again and you should have this 1/2 unit.
It will match up with one of the neutral triangles (they should be the same size).
Stitch these together using a 1/4" seam. As before, I stitch with the strings on the bottom as I want to make super sure I don't lose my point at the base of the 2 1/2" square. Then take time to have some fun and send a picture.
Measure your unit. (Did you do a sample one first so that you know your seam allowance is correct?) You should be at 4 1/2" square.
The last step on these units - trim those dog ears and call it good.
UNIT 5 - make 32
This is shampoo, rinse, repeat only with a different color combination AND the end of these units. I promise.
You will need - 32 - Color 4 2 1/2" squares, 32 PAIR Color 5 2 1/2" triangles, and 32 of your clue 1 color 6 triangles.
Sew as before, starting like this.
After your triangles are all on, you have this 1/2 unit
Match it up with a color 6 triangle
Stitch these together using a 1/4" seam. As before, I stitch with the strings on the bottom as I want to make super sure I don't lose my point at the base of the 2 1/2" square. My fun picture this time is how they came off the table as I sewed.
Make sure your measurement is right - Never assume! Always check each unit with a sample first -- your cutting could be off or your machine could have been bumped.
Final step -- dog ears off and this unit is complete.
Unit 6 - make 4
With your 4 pair of color 1 and 5 triangles and a 1/4" seam, make 4 half square triangle units.The should measure 3 1/2" square when finished. Trim the dog ears and you are finished. Too bad all units don't go this quick.
And that's it. Clue 3 checked off your list. Here is your inventory list:
2 - 9" neutral (color 6) squares (if stringing - they are diagonal)
68 - 4 1/2" neutral (color 6) squares (if stringing - 64 straight, 4 diagonal)
64 - Unit 1's
64 - Unit 2's
16 - Unit 3's
32 - Unit 4's
32 - Unit 5's
4 - Unit 6's
